Agentic Commerce Won't Kill Cards — But It Will Open a GapAI Agent
Cards will dominate agentic commerce for existing merchants. Stablecoins will power the ones that don't exist yet — and that gap is bigger than most people think.
The Setup
When Citrini Research published a piece arguing stablecoins would disintermediate Visa and Mastercard, card stocks dropped sharply and Crypto Twitter cheered. The thesis sounded clean: AI agents optimize every transaction, interchange is a tax, stablecoins route around it.
Noah Levine at a16z Crypto spent his days in crypto — and wanted it to be right. But most of it is wrong. Not because stablecoins don’t matter. Because the real opportunity has nothing to do with replacing cards.
Why Cards Win Most of This
Cards don’t just move money. They extend unsecured credit, pre-authorize uncertain transactions, and guarantee fraud protection with chargeback rights. Stablecoins can move money. They cannot yet do the rest.
- 82% of Americans carry a rewards card. 18 billion cards are in circulation globally.
- Visa has issued over 16 billion tokens — an agent is just another device that carries one.
- Visa’s Intelligent Commerce framework is in pilot. Mastercard’s Agent Pay is live for all US cardholders.
- Stripe + OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol has Etsy live and 1M+ Shopify merchants coming online.
For existing merchants and consumers, cards will likely dominate agentic commerce. Full stop.
The Real Stablecoin Opportunity: Merchants That Don’t Exist Yet
Every platform shift creates merchants the existing payment system cannot serve — until it adapts. PayPal took 16 years before processors created formal underwriting guidelines for the model it pioneered.
The AI wave is creating these merchants faster than any prior shift:
- 36 million new developers joined GitHub last year alone
- In YC W2025, 25% of companies had codebases 95%+ AI-generated
- On Bolt.new, 67% of 5 million users are not developers
A vibe coder builds a financial data tool in four hours. No website. No legal entity. Another agent calls it 40,000 times at $0.001/call — $40 revenue, zero human checkout. The first question is always: “How do I get paid?” Right now, most of them can’t.
Processors reject them — not because the tech is lacking, but because underwriting requires a merchant profile. No website, no entity, no track record = unacceptable risk.
Protocols like x402 embed stablecoin payments directly into HTTP requests. No merchant account, no processor, no onboarding, no chargeback liability. These merchants aren’t choosing stablecoins over cards. They’re choosing stablecoins over nothing.
Why It Matters
The pattern is consistent across every platform shift: new merchant waves come first, underwriting catches up later. In that gap, stablecoins are the infrastructure.
Cards serve every merchant a processor can underwrite. Stablecoins serve every merchant a processor cannot. The next wave of commerce will be built in that gap — and vibe coders, AI-native tools, and autonomous agent services are already living there.
What to watch:
- x402 protocol adoption across AI developer tooling
- How quickly Visa/Mastercard extend agent token support
- Whether stablecoin payment rails (Circle, Base) capture the “new merchant” cohort before processors adapt
- Circle、Base
